1956 - Part 1 " Operation Redwing JTF-7" Eniwetok Area of the Pacific, ~ 1956 Purpose: Provide ground and upper air weather support for thermonuclear weapons testing.
Test of 1.1 Megaton "Dakota" 26 Jun 1956 at Bikini Atoll Betio Island weather site chosen on lagoon at Eastern end (lower Left) Fumatahachi Island, an uninhabited island near the Southern end of the atoll Survey of Kusaie Island - LSTs had operated in the harbor Five standard 20' x 48' buildings were suggested at each location. Tarawa building shown. Ronriki Island at Tarawa Atoll surveyed and chosen for weather site Fumatahachi Island, Kapingamarangi Atoll was surveyed and selected for a weather site Native houses and families surrounded the weather site at Kusaie Crash boat stands by to meet the SA-16 aircraft at Kapingamarangi Permission was given to fly the American flag over the camp at Tarawa Eniwetok Base Receiving Section showing tons of supplies which had to quickly be moved Kusaie Island's water tower had a damaged cross member which was repaired Reefers at Tarawa accommodated local food supplies and Kusaie's excess food Visitors and camp personnel enjoy a meal at Tarawa's weather station mess hall The radio at Tarawa was put in operation using a whip antenna until a permanent antenna was installed A weather balloon at Rongerik is inflated in preparation for a radiosonde release
